Rahul Dravid pulverised
Zimbabwe's bowling for the second time in the match as India chalked up a
seven-wicket victory in the first Test in Delhi on Wednesday.
Dravid followed his
first-innings 200 not out with an unbeaten 70 as India, set a target of
190 in 47 overs, cruised home with 57 balls to spare on the fifth and
final day.
Indian captain Sourav
Ganguly, whose bold move to declare just 36 runs ahead on Tuesday the
match wide open, hit 65 not out in a run-a-minute stand of 110 with
Dravid.
Ganguly delighted some
25,000 home fans with three sixes and seven fours as India took a 1-0 lead
in the two-Test series.
The second Test starts in
Nagpur on Saturday.
Zimbabwe, who ended on the
losing side despite making 422 for nine declared in the first innings,
were shot out for 225 in their second innings midway through the afternoon
session.
Man-of-the-match Javagal
Srinath set up the home team's win five for 60 in the second innings for a
match haul of nine wickets on the wearing wicket.
Ganguly, slammed in the
media for playing just four frontline bowlers, said his team's batting
strength won the day. "With six batsmen in the side, I knew we would
chase whatever target Zimbabwe set us," he said. |
